‘Clunk clip every trip’ was a phrase everyone who lived in the 1970s was aware of. The advertising campaign to get everyone to wear a seat belt in cars was fronted by (ahem) Jimmy Savile, Enough said about that, but although the Government encouraged everyone to wear seat belts from 1970, it wasn’t until 1983 that it became illegal not to wear them in the front seats of cars. In 1991, it became illegal not to wear seat belts in the rear seats of vehicles. That’s over 30 years ago.
Although I am of the opinion that you should be free to choose to wear a seat belt (but only if you don’t have any passengers in your car), I also think that those who choose (illegally) not to wear a seat belt are damned stupid.
When Diana, Princess of Wales, died in a car crash in Paris, she was sitting in the rear of the vehicle and was not wearing a seat belt. I don’t know if she would have survived the crash which killed her if she had been wearing a seat belt, but her chances of survival would have been much greater. If the speeding driver of her car had not been drunk, that would have helped, too.
Rishi Sunak was damned stupid. He has damned stupid thinking that no-one would notice that he was not wearing a seat belt in the video that he posted. He was also damned stupid because his driver could have been forced to take evasive action in order to protect his life from those who wish to do him harm.
Last year we learned that Sunak, whilst he was Chancellor of the Exchequer, held a US green card, which allowed him to permanently reside there, and we also learned that his wife enjoyed non-domicile status whilst he was responsible for increasing taxes on the rest of us. For me, that highlighted that he lacks political acumen. Inferring that those of us who want taxes reduced are stupid and then posting a video from the rear seat of his ministerial car whilst not wearing a seat belt, highlights that point again.
